Security Guard Note-Taking
Before a report can be written, security guards must take notes. Notes help record the information so that you won’t forget it when it is time to write the report. Notes form the foundation of the report. The following equations illustrate the importance of notes to a report:
• Quality notes = Quality report
• Poor notes = Poor report
• Inadequate notes = Inadequate report
Notes are also important to help establish an officer’s rapport with a witness. When an officer writes down what someone is saying, that person can see that the officer is con¬cerned. What they are saying to the officer is important enough to be written down. The officer is in effect making the person feel important and in so doing also makes himself look more professional.
